Eigentlich will ich ganz andere Dinge schreiben.

2 Beautiful People -about me as a writer (or not so writer)

Cait, the Paperfury and Sky from Further up and Further in host a meme that's usually about telling things about the characters of the stories you're writing and this week about yourself as a writer. Well, as far as I can call myself a writer.
I totally like this meme's idea. I don't know why I haven't taken part earlier. So here we go (in pure English, because every time I do it in English I'm too lazy to translate again)

How many years have you been writing?

I write since I'm ten. So that's almost eleven years. Reading this a day after I think I must have been very tired, because it's only five years. Really, where was my brain then? I'm only fifteen, not 21 :D

When did you officially consider yourself a "writer"?

Uhm, actually I'm calling this blog "dreamjob: writer" because I still don't completely do. I think I'll call myself a real writer, when I've published my first book. But if you just mean somebody who writes, well, yes, maybe I am a writer. So... maybe I need to overthink my idea of writing.

Why did you start writing?

Because of a writingt contest. I was ten years old and there was a Cornelia Funke writing contest in the German issue of the National Geographic Kids magazine. And I took part. I don't know what I've written back then and I don't even have the handwritten paper I've sent there anymore, but I remember it a very bad story. Very bad. That time I decided, that if I couldn't become an adventurer or fairy, I'd become a writer. The next years I wrote one bad-written little story after the other. I had good grades in essays at school and I knew that I could write, but I never even made a plan before I started writing. I just did, but the worlds, characters where always to smooth and too perfect to write any story with them. It was like writing a story about paradise before Adam and Eve where banned. And I didn't get, that problems had to happen and things needed to be worse for my characters, to make a plot possible. But, er... wait a minute. I didn't even have proper plots. Or plots with too many holes

What’s your favorite part of writing?

I love editing. I really dream of one day editing my first draft and making it perfect, of nibbling through every single chapter of my draft. Again and again. Which leads me to my next question

What’s your biggest writing struggle?

The problem is, I'm not patient enough, to finish a draft and start editing inbetween, because I think all the time, that this or that has to be corrected, and that should be slightly different, and so I don't go on writing at the bottom but somewhere in the middle, and I have never finished a draft yet. Shame on me. I should really take part at NaNoWriMo this year.

Do you write best at night or day?

That's an interesting question. Is the time a difference? I think the place and the situation are much more important for this than the time. So, when I'm concentrated somewhere with a notebook outside, in a café, in the school cantina or in the library, I can write very well. My desk and my notebook are actually a big problem, because there I easily get distracted by... blogs. You know... School lessons are not a good time to write. I've tried, but it doesn't work well and isn't good for my school grade either. Except in German (Equivalent to what English is for you guys) because of our teacher who is really slow.

What does your writing space look like?

My writing space? It's everywhere. I write in any place better that at home at my desk where my laptop is. I usually take my paper notebook everywhere to scribble and later on type everything on the computer at home, because I'm not good at writing, when I've got access to blogs.
This is my desk on the left, where I usually write. Not. And on the right my notebooks where I do write. Sometimes. At the top you can see one of my notes abused as a bookmark :D

How long does it typically take you to write a complete draft?

I don't know. I've never finished a draft *blushes, looks to the ground feeling bad*

How many projects do you work on at once?

At the moment I'm writing a short story for a bloh project (trying to keep it short), plotting a retelling of Snow White (or rather spending time getting my handwritten notes into a digital document), writing the chronicles of ingrain wallpaper (No, I'm not painting the wall, I'm really writing a story set on a wallpaper) and I want to start writing the Snow White retelling some day.

Do you prefer writing happy endings, sad ones, or somewhere in between?

I haven't written any endings. I've only plotted them yet. But I think, for me, it is a minor matter whether it's a good or bad ending. The issue is making something happen inbetween. So I don't know what I prefer. Though I think most of my endings are somewhere inbetween.

List a few authors who’ve influenced your writing journey.

Cornelia Funke made me start writing at all. It was the winner of that writing contest I've written about, who taught me, that a magical world needs problems too to make stories happen there. Writing utopia makes you an idealist, but not a writer. Michael Ende and Walter Moers first taught me, that you can tell a story with little plot, if you just make things happen for a reason and that's everything. Christophe Paolini made me dream of writing a book when I'm fifteen. Well, I'm becoming sixteen in february, so... no. But I think it was the wrong intention, wanting to do it, because he did it.

Do you let people read your writing? Why or why not?

I will to let people read my work, but let me first finish my draft. :D

What’s your ultimate writing goal or dream?

Finishing a draft. Yes, I do feel ashamed. I keep starting all kinds of other stories, even though it's always this one story that has my hear. Maybe also the lack of finished drafts is the reason why I still don't perfectly consider myself as a writer

If you didn’t write, what would you want to do?

Librarian. Journalist. Webdesigner. Programmer. Biologist. Archaeologist. Chemistrian

Do you have a book you’d like to write one day but don’t feel you’re ready to attempt it yet?

I don't know how to call the genre it's set in. Wait, let me call it "Rural Fantasy" because, it's set in my home town, which neither makes my story Urban Fantasy nor High Fantasy. Well, a fantasy story set in a small town. You know. It's one of my stories from a boys perspektive and the only first person narrative story where I don't feel the need of adding second narrator. It's about a magic witch world, where boys and men count less and how he discovers the lie the unfair system he lives in is based on. Also I want to write it very magical, with a lot of hidden magic, that normale people don't see and magical folk do see. I've made a lot of attempts to write it already, but I've realized, that I need time to figure everything about this story out.

Which story has your heart and won’t let go?

The one I've just mentioned

To sum up, this helped me more about writing than I've expected.  Because having this meme in the back of my mind made me writing more this week :-)

your Mulan, who is now going to leave the browser and will write on.

4 My Writing Wishlist /Meine Schreibwunschliste

I've seen this on many English writing blogs and I like the idea of it. When I had just seen it I immediately wanted to do that too. I mean, my dreamjob is writer, you see? And it's totally clear that I've got a lot of books and stories upon my mind, I'd love to write down one day. So, here's my writing wish list, read and enjoy :-)
And oh, there's a link-up to this, so if you also want to write you writing wish list and add it, do it!

Let Peter Pan grow up /Peter Pan aufwachsen lassen

Isn't it a bit sad, if you never grow up and you're immortal and all your friend grow up and you can't change it? No wonder Peter Pan is such a jerk. But still he wouldn't like it much, if he watched himself growing up. So, what if? Imagine a hundreds of year old boy, who suddenly has to face the very usual problems of growing up. The thought is very funny. But, I probably won't take it to serious ;-)

Also, was wenn? Der Gedanke is ziemlich witzig.

An Epic Fantasy retelling of Snow White /Eine epische Fantasy Neuerzählung von Schneewittchen

I've actually already plotted this one and the only thing I need to do now is go on and write it down. Which is the major problem. I already love thes story now, but I never have the patience to write it down.
You know, I never wanted to plot a love triangle, but as soon as I started thinking about this one it ended up in a love triangle between Snow White, the Prince and the Hunter. Oh my.

Other retellings of Fairytales /andere Märchenneuerzählungen

Did I mention, that I really, really love Fairytales? No? Then it's really high time! There are so many fairytales I would love to retell again and again. And I don't care whether they have already been retold too much, I'll yet retell them again. But I think I'd want to retell them by going back to the roots of the stoy first and then find my own path from there. Like I'd take the original versions of the fairytales(there's always an even more original version), which are usually much more violent and then write my own version of that.

A retelling of Mulan in a Steampunk-Fantasy China /Eine Neurzählung von Mulan in einem Steampunkfantasy China

For me it's already strange to watch the Mulan movie, because I feel adressed every time somebody calls that name, but I nevertheless like that movie and would love to write about a Steampunk China mashing everything up that makes up China with a lot of Steampunk elements. Imagine flying steamcycles, similar to electric scooters that the people use for locomotion...

Mermaids and Technology /Meerjungfrauen und Technik

Actually this is almost not about mermaids, because my Mermaids don't have tails but high-developed technology, but the breath underwater and are able to react to signals from nature that we don't even realize, like they can sense the acidity of water and can use echolocation and all those things you'd relate to water creatures. And they can manimpulate water in any way they want. But beside of that they're much more human than the usual mermaids.

A world like ours -where magic is usual /Eine Welt wie unsere -in der Magie normal ist

You know what annoys me most of some fantasy stories? The long explanation part, when the protagonist (that of course has never believed in magic before) discovers that there is magic. And everything doesn't seem quite natural, because the story tries to explain magic scientifically. Which usually doesn't work. And that's why I want to write about a world, that is just like ours, with cars driving through the streets, where people drink coffee in the morning, go to school or work, are ruled in a democratic system (well, not always...) and everythig is normal, except that there's some magic that is smoothly integrated in every day life and totally usual. Everyone knows that there is magic. And everything is natural, so nobody has to explain the protagonist anything, because he basically knows the most things about his own world already. And still magic needs no scientific explanation, because it's magic.

Was normalerweise nicht funktioniert.

Nerdy witches /Nerdige Hexen

That's a bit related to the one above, except this one doesn't exclude being a hidden magic world. But what I always wondered, was, what if witches and technology were best friends? What if magic folk where using computers and, like surfing in the World Wide Witch Web or the Fairynet or something like that? They could of course still have their own strange interpretation of the technology, like a magic talking mixer, a lawn mower that mows on it's own and doesn't need to be programmed. Maybe, organic computers. I would even make an attempt to write about magic eBooks, even though I not the one who likes eBooks.

A space story without space suits

Do you know these old-fashioned science fictions, when the people didn't know anything about space and thought you could for example fly to the moon on a balloon or you could breath out there? I have some kind of that upon my mind, with wooden space ships, Settlers who live with their sheep on the moon, with sword fights on mars and a thick jungle on venus and with humanoid people living on the other planets (other planets than earth) which are quite human. And with a comet that also is turned into a space ship. All of this is inspired by old science fiction stories, the movie "Treasure Planet", a chapter in "Otherland" by Tad Williams, and the Little Prince, who also lives on a asteroid and travels with a swarm of swallows to the next.

Probably I've only created a lot of worlds, but still don't know, what kind of plot they should have. But, that's the plan for the future :D
your Mulan, who now has her head full of wild ideas and doesn't know what to do with them

/Bechdel-Test for men?

Also:

Have you ever heard of the Bechdel-Test? It says, that a movie or book is only feminism-proof, if
  1. There is more than one woman/girl
  2. They talk to each other
  3. about something else than a man/boy
The stories I write comply with these conditions more than enough. Usually my protagonist is female and experiences something together with her best friend/sister (yeah, I really need to escape this schema and the antagonists are usually also female (bitch fight!) so I wondered if I shouldn't try this test the other way round. So:
  1. There is more than one man/boy
  2. They talk to each other
  3. about something else than a woman/girl
because my stories don't have a bad woman rate but a bad men rate and I wanted to know if I'm not somehow sometimes exaggerate with feminism... You won't understand this completely, because I haven't presented them on my blog completely and the names won't tell you anything, but the basic idea is hopefully still clear.

Durchgefallen

So let's take for example Latinie (actually a collection of texts and no story)
Female characters:
Two She-Consuls. A two-headed-queen. Duchesses. Smurfettes. (Smurf appear only as a gruop but there is no special male smurf character that appears. Not even Papasmurf)
Male characters:
A police officer in valetown. Bernd the Bread. Obelix and Dogmatix.
The officer doesn't talk. Bernd the Bread only says: "muck". Obelix only laments in front of Dogmatix. Since Obelix only laments and Dogmatix doesn't answer and probably about Consul Mulan (a female person...), because she has banned him from Latinia this doesn't count. Also I didn't invent Obelix, so this doesn't count.
Failure

In "Faerysane" sind
Die weiblichen Figuren:
Windpfeil. Nachtbrise.
Durchgefallen

In Faerysane there are
Female characters:
Windbolt. Nightbreeze. Isana, a She-Nightmare. Faeryn, the queen of the firefairies.
Male characters:
Members of High Council (without names). A giant called eric.
The council members talk to each other, but they are minor characters that are only mentioned, so this doesn't count.
Failure

Bei "Tobias und Sophia"
Die weiblichen Figuren:
Sophia. Ihre Mutter. Ihre Schwestern. Tobias' Mutter. Nima. Ihre Mutter. Marius' Mutter. Maria.
Tobias. Tassilo. Marius. Joschua. Joschuas Vater.
Okay, immerhin. Also
Bestanden

In "Tobias and Sophia"
Female characters:
Sophia. Her Mothers. Her sisters. Tobias' mother. Nima. Her Mother. Marius Mother. Maria (Fathers almost never appear in that story...)
Male characters:
Tobias. Tassilo. Marius. Joschua. Joschuas father.
So, at leat. Of all stories the one full of anti-men witches the men rate is good. They talk to each other and the main character is male. So it
Passed

Conclusion: I'm an anti-men feminist nd have to improve in this aspect ;-)

0 Spaziergang auf dem Feld /Walk on the fields #5

Yesterday I was again in the dell I lately told about,  awhile after it rained and the birds all tweeted I sat on a ledge reaching so far into the dell that I actually almost sat on a small hill in the middle of the dell. And then the hill around seemed to breath, as if they lived and I turned my head again and again, because I had this strange feeling, like a gigantic breathing dragon was standing behind me. At all it was special yesterday. I saw a deer and the dell seemed even wilde than the first time. Around our place there used to be a fox straying around and now I imagine that he had a hideout in a place like this. And I saw the woods far out there and tried to imagine, that they used to be connected with the small wood in the dell and that everything used to be wood.

Jetzt seid ihr baff, was?

Yesterday I had my first idea for a story playing in reality. Yes. No fantasy story like most, no dystopia like "The boy with green eyes" -a story, that began as a work fo school .but just a really realistic story set in our world. And also a love story. Now you're gobsmacked, are you? Okay, maybe not everybody, but those who know me do. And it's about simple things happening in our everyday life. When I was walking on the fields and thought about whether the internet really is more social or if it's only emotionless and had the idea for the story that now stands clear and simple in my head. I really want to keep the story for myself, because it's really, really good, so I don't want anybody to steal it. But it's important for me, that it's a real story that could really happen.

Yesterday I was totally smashed because I again had stress with my parents. And I wondered if you maybe have the best ideas when you're feeling worse. Whether suffering, problems and everything else making our lives hard are what drives us forward, inspires and pushes us, because it gives us the will to make things better, because only of this we have things worth fighting for; because there are problems we have to overcome. If we were all around contented, would we ever have emotional releases or lose our temper? (I'm thinking of the book "Brave New World by Aldous Huxley) In this case, could we ever create art? Would ever think about whether life is worth living and wonder why we live? No. So maybe that's reasonable, that we also need problems to go. It would be a bit stupid, if humankind wouldn't go on, I mean if people would all be happy, but nothing happened. Maybe we need to suffer a bit so the world can get better.

3 Nach dem Austeilen #5

Heute habe ich mich selbst übertroffen, was verspätet abgelieferte Arbeit angeht.

Today I topped myself in doing my work far too late. Actually I schould deliver my brochures on saturday morning, but well, now it became sunday evening. I had reasons

I today thought about, that I, when I was twelve and wrote serious stories for the first time -before I did too, but then the stories were very simple and not very good. Whatever, for me twelve counts as the age, in which I really knew, what I wanted to write, when I began a story. I always think back with hot cheeks, that I once began a story about a fifteen(!)-year old girl, which falls in love. Uh, yes... in retrospective I think it really was ridiculous. The main charakter was twelve, and those parts were okay, but then I think of what I intended to write about the fifteen-year old... help.

Dear twelve-year old Mulan,
with fifteen it's possible to have a boyfriend, but ou really don't know anything about love (At least not about that kind of love) I do not know either, but the point is, that contrary to you I realized that. And forget trying to fall in love to one of the idiots in your class. You won't fall in love, because there is not a single romanticist in this class, also love is in any case not the way you imagine it.
Your fifteen-year old Mulan

I also found something out about Gardenia: It's a country in which alread very modern technology exists, but since  not everybody can afford it, doesn't exist everywhere. Respektively, there are many rich, who let the technologies deliver from the producer, but there is less central organization , so there are feral places, in which unicorns stray and streets, which are still powered by gas, because the state can't afford it, to bring any changes. So there are rural areas on the country, in which time stands still, and a city much industrialization-like. And then again of course the actual Gardenia, in which the rich seal theirselves off from the world. Everybody has only the amount of modern technology he can afford, respektively in case of the muses he wants. Gardenia has a strange mixture of past and future. There are airships (a lot) and at the same time computer-operated systems, because in Gardenia the natural law is different. A small apparent world in which life behind the scenes is a bloodshed. And our friends Maika and Lina are drawn to it.

It's incredible, how much can happen in just two weeks. Three days on a seminar for politics. Two days only singing in the choir. Watching a movie, packing for the skiing holiday and going on a birthdays, all under the pressure of time. In the same night already driving, to be on the skislope at forenoon and eat lunch on the alp. A week of skiing. Snow! There's snow in the Alps! While we have spring-like weather here, there is snow there. And today in the evening I again delivered the brochures, without gloves and without any cap. Mild Temperatures. It can't be any crazier.

While delivering my brochures, I again recognized, how wonderfully inspiring it can be, when you do a monotonous work and may let your mind wander. I again came to a story  and I thought of the following: In most stories the protagonists are shocked, puzzled or surprised when they get to know, that they are Elves or get magic powers or discover, that they see fantastic creatures or somewhat. Usually they can't believe it at first, like Harry Potter, or they're not very happy. Sometimes they even take it, as it is, but they're never excited and never glad.
But doesn't everyone have the secret wish to be like that? Actually most people wish to be heros, so why shouldn't they be excited like a child at christmas?  Until now in one of my stories the main charakter used to fill whole passages, that all this and that cannot be, and if he maybe took drugs accidentally, but now I realized, that he's not the type for that. He's not such a sceptic as Maika, although he's not a real observer like Lina, but I think it fits much more to him to be fascinated by a new, magical world.
Secondarily I recognized, that dragons play a much bigger role than I so far thought...anyway, I'm still not writing this story, but it's interesting, which ideas I get, when I think about it.
