After some time the man had quite luck again, consideringthe fact, that he was in this city and managed it to open a tavern in his small house. He called it the Clod, in remembrance of the small clod of earth he had once posessed. Some centuries later, there would be a fish restaurant with the same name, on which the menu offered plaice.
But in its early days the Clod was a tavern in which only drinks were served, if at all there was soup sometimes. The poor man, which was tavern keeper now, had made an inimitable ascension, not knowing, that most people in the city by the sea didn't have it easy. Whithout even having recognized it, he belonged to the richer half of the people. He had acquired his citizenship by moving into the emty house. In so doing he became one of the heard-hearted citizens of the city, who didn't gave aything away they had. He didn't knew, how cruel the city really was. He believed adamantly, everybody could achieve in this city, if he just worked hard enough and thought of the poor as lazy.
He wife meanwhile became rounder and rounder, and it looked as if she would bear her child soon. The man hoped, that this time it would be a son, though didn't have much more than the tavern, but even of that, one can become proud of.
It was a hot day in the city by the sea, when again a ship sailed in. One of many coming and going day by day. On this ship there was a young married couple of a far country, together with their son. They had as much as the tavern keeper and his wife had had, as he they had arrived once, and came with the same hope.
